In my case, the sensor was working fine, but the o-ring was leaking. If anyone has a part number for just the o-ring on this sensor, I'd love to get one so I can have a spare. Total time for this is less than 15 minutes even allowing for cleaning up under the airbox and washing and wiping up any spilled coolant. Replace the lower airbox and fasten it with the single bolt, then replace the air filter and top of airbox. Then clean up everything and after making sure the electrical connector on the sensor is dry, clip on the connector for the wiring harness. Make sure it seats all the way down and clicks into position.

Only a very small amount of coolant spilled out in my case (maybe a couple of ounces at most), but in any case you can get the new sensor inserted in just a few seconds. Squeeze in on the two plastic tabs sticking up on the left and right and you'll be able to lift out the old sensor. In the fifth picture, you see the sensor with the electrical connector removed.

Push the wire clip toward the front of the car and the electrical connector will lift off. With the airbox out, you'll see the sensor right behind the right side of the radiator (fourth picture). Unscrew the bolt on the left side of the airbox lower section (where I'm pointing) and the lower airbox will lift out easily. It is also common for a coolant temperature. And the response of the computer may unbalance the timing and fuel calculations. If the coolant temperature sensor malfunctions, it can transmit a false signal to the computer. Unclip 4 clips on the airbox cover and 2 clips where the cover attaches to the intake tube containing the MAF, and lift off the cover and remove the air filter. Poor fuel economy is another symptom that indicates your coolant temperature sensor is malfunctioning. In the second picture, you see the right side airbox. This ensures you will spill the minimum amount of coolant when you change the sensor.

I wanted to post some pics from the job to help anyone facing this in the future.įirst, the sensor looks like the first picture.Īlso, make sure your coolant is cold and relieve any pressure by removing the cap on the expansion tank and putting it back on. Thanks to board member "bimmerule" for pointing out how easy it is to change the sensor from above. I had a problem recently with seepage (leakage) from where the lower coolant temperature sensor fits into the nylon fitting on the lower radiator hose.
